What to do on Tasmania’s North West
The North West Coast is Tasmania’s food bowl. Fast becoming a key agri-food and agri-tourism hub, it is the perfect place to get back to a simpler, gentler life.
Beyond our farm gates, there are places to stay, explore and indulge and to save you the effort we have put together a list of our favourite must-do’s for your journey on the North West. Stay awhile and embrace the local itinerary below.
+ EXPLORE
Guide Falls Waterfall - 400 metres from our property lies tourist attraction Guide Falls, a beautiful tiered–cascade waterfall. The waterfall is located inside Guide Falls Reserve, a popular picnic attraction with tables and bbq amenities located near the entrance of the reserve and further along the gravel road at the top of the Guide Falls.
Following the Guide River from the lower picnic area is an easy 5 minute walk to the waterfall on a well maintained track with guard rails and seats to enjoy the views. The track meanders through to the bottom of the falls. Here, you can enjoy the view, peaceful sounds and gentle mist of water. There are relatively steep steps to the top of Guide Falls where you are greeted with a viewing platform, the upper picnic area and road.
Oldaker Falls - If chasing waterfalls around the North West sounds right up your alley you should follow up your visit to Guide Falls with a trip to Oldaker Falls. Oldaker Falls is a small waterfall situated on the southern end of Burnie Park, a public park with magnificent facilities, playgrounds, gardens, and lawns. The park has car parking which is only accessible between dawn and dusk. From the car park area, several bitumen tracks run throughout the park that will take you to Oldaker Falls.
Situated on Stoney Creek, Oldaker falls varies in flow throughout the year, and even in winter can experience little flow at times. However, after good rainfall, Oldaker Falls comes to life.
Fern Glade Reserve - If our platypus at Guide Falls Farm plays shy you are definitely likely to spot one here. Fern Glade Reserve is one of Burnie's most valuable natural and recreational resources. A peaceful river valley on the edge of the city abundant in flora and fauna, with dozens of orchid species to look at. Amazing bird and wildlife thrive along the river banks, with long walks along the banks of the Emu River often leading to the chance to see platypus surfacing.
Table Cape Lighthouse - The Table Cape Lighthouse is set on a sheer cliff edge surrounded by scenic farmlands. A scenic 40 minute drive from our farm will lead you to the beggining of a short cliff-top walking track to the Table Cape Lighthouse, the only operating lighthouse open (seasonally) for tours in mainland Tasmania.
